The nature of THE PLACE

  • Established SE Portland neighborhood.

  • Oversized lot. Ability someday to divide the lot into 2 parcels.

  • A detached backyard ADU with privacy issues to/from neighbors.

 

 

The nature of THE CLIENT & THEIR NEEDS

  • A multi-generational family where the grandparents will occupy the new backyard ADU while the parents and their kids will occupy the main house. The common backyard space design being a shared space between the 2 families.

  • Net-zero principles utilized.

  • Connections between the main house and ADU needed

  • A view to the West Hills and downtown was desired from the roof deck.

  • Desired aesthetic: a modern Japanese inspired space.

THE DESIGN RESPONSE

  • Site planning for a multi-generational family where the property provides for separate dwelling units and shared yard areas.

  • Site planning with garden areas, play areas, outdoor seating areas, outdoor eating areas.

  • Created privacy between the main house and ADU 

  • Esthetic:  Modern Japanese - wood, steel, glass, natural light.

  • 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 800 sf adu with full basement and access to rooftop deck and garden.  Views to downtown Portland and the West Hills.

  • Add a considerations throughout the site and ADU.

  • Net-zero ready envelope and using “better built” methods and materials.
