A detached backyard ADU with privacy issues to/from neighbors.

The nature of THE CLIENT & THEIR NEEDS

A multi-generational family where the grandparents will occupy the new backyard ADU while the parents and their kids will occupy the main house. The common backyard space design being a shared space between the 2 families.
Net-zero principles utilized.
Connections between the main house and ADU needed
A view to the West Hills and downtown was desired from the roof deck.
Desired aesthetic: a modern Japanese inspired space.

THE DESIGN RESPONSE

Site planning for a multi-generational family where the property provides for separate dwelling units and shared yard areas.
Site planning with garden areas, play areas, outdoor seating areas, outdoor eating areas.
Created privacy between the main house and ADU
Esthetic: Modern Japanese - wood, steel, glass, natural light.
1 bedroom, 1 bath, 800 sf adu with full basement and access to rooftop deck and garden. Views to downtown Portland and the West Hills.
Add a considerations throughout the site and ADU.
Net-zero ready envelope and using “better built” methods and materials.
