WOODSTOCK ADU

Departure_scatter-01.png

The nature of THE PLACE

  • Established SE Portland neighborhood.

  • Corner property along an alley.

  • Evaluate an existing detached 20’x20’ garage with the intentions of converting to a new ADU with loft space for a family member.

  • Previous height restriction and impact to loft portion.

The nature of THE CLIENT & THEIR NEEDS

  • Create a small 20’x20’ ADU with a small loft above.

  • Energy efficient with "better built" construction principles.

  • With the exterior spaces, create an art studio space along with private / public areas between the 2 living units.

  • Make the new ADU exterior design sympathetic to the neighborhood and the house.

  • Client able to add specialty interior and exterior fixtures – add their creative touches.

  • Bring in lots of natural light and make the space feel larger than it actually is.

THE DESIGN RESPONSE

  • A sympathetic exterior design to the existing house.

  • Sloped ceiling loft area with dormer side windows.

  • Exposed interior wood rafters and beams.

  • Simple, open floor plan, light filled form the loft windows above.

  • Designed for aging-in-place considerations.

  • Loft used as a multi-use space.

  • Recycling, reuse, repurposed items throughout the project.
