WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
For each project, and without preconceptions, it’s about the search for great and authentic residential home design solutions that respond perfectly and appropriately to each unique site, the client, and their needs.
"From the initial gathering of information about the project to simply listening, it all begins to point towards your home design solution."
THE DEPARTURE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN PROCESS
Dan’s depth of experience comes through with the time and care he takes in the design process for every home. There is no such thing as a rush job at Departure Architecture — we’ll search for the answers at every step to find the solution that’s just right for your needs.
"Not only is the design process detailed, but also fun, rewarding, and effective. You often learn a lot about yourself and what actually speaks to your heart."
YOUR HOME DESIGN
The early part of this phase involves information gathering about the site, your needs, the budget, the schedule, and all other driving factors. The result we’re searching for is not for a predetermined, one-size-fits-all solution. We’ll take a 10,000-foot view of your project at first.
Once we understand what this project wants and needs, we begin working on design ideas to start bringing your thoughts and ideas to life. All design is in a 3-D format, so ideas and concepts can easily be understood. We’ll present initial designs for your review and fine-tune to incorporate your suggestions. We'll also discuss anticipated costs for the design. Eventually, together, we’ll produce a final design that best represents what you seek.
CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION PHASE
The final step in the process is the permit drawings themselves. This involves the drawing and specifications of the final details for the home. It involves coordination with engineers and the general contractor to create a final Construction Documentation Drawing Package that we will use for permitting submittal, for actual constructability purposes, and for final updated construction costing.
The permitting process can be quite complex; therefore, Departure Architecture submits all home or ADU design drawings and specs to the local building department for review. During this process, we often need to address items that the building department may additionally require for its review. We track the progress until the permit is approved and issued.
CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION & OVERSIGHT PHASE
It's about results in the end. To ensure that the design is implemented during the actual construction, we periodically visit the site to view the progress. Additionally, although the drawings are complete, important and key coordination occurs during this phase with the contractor and your subcontractors. With the complexity of today's home designs, coordination and oversight are crucial components to fulfilling the vision for your home.
"Be ready to embrace the forks in the road, as they guide the direction of the process and lead you towards real and authentic design solutions."
