The nature of THE PLACE

  • Established SE Portland neighborhood.

  • Convert an old oversized 1-car garage into an ADU / art studio.

  • The property has a small backyard so using the exterior spaces needed to be wisely and efficiently utilized

 

The nature of THE CLIENT & THEIR NEEDS

  • Appreciation of wine and winemaking. Artist studio, office needs. Needed an ADU for family, friends, and other unknown guests as well as for rental possibilities. Flexible.

  • Need a connected covered outdoor area as well for art projects and sitting.

  • Wanted an energy efficient design for this conversion.

THE DESIGN RESPONSE​

  • An open and versatile floor plan that can accommodate numerous arrangements and needs.

  • Needed to remove the entire roof, so a new Crow’s Nest was added for a possible bed or office location.

  • Utilizing the former garage door opening, replace with fully operable wood and glass panels that could open fully in the summer.

  • Mini-split heating and cooling unit added.

  • Large oversized walk-in shower that also functions as a clean-up area for art projects.
